Type Locality and Naming

Huangshan Basin. The name of the Qiyunshan Formation was given by the No 332 Geological Team of the Anhui Metallurgy Bureau (1971) in Qiyunshan of the Xiuning County, Anhui. The type locality is in Qiyunshan of the Xiuning County, represented by the Qiyunshan section in Xiuning of Anhui (29º48', 118º01').


Lithology and Thickness

The Qiyunshan Formation is a group of brownish grey, purple red thick-bedded conglomerate, calcareous sandstone, with intercalations of thin-bedded silty mudstone. It is 207 to 485 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably overlies the Huizhou Fm.

Upper contact

It unconformably contacts with the overlying Xiaoyan Fm.

Regional extent

This formation is distributed in the Qiyunshan and Dangjinjie areas of the Xiuning County.

Fossils

The silty beds yield fossil plant Sphenopteris, Cladophlebis cf. exliformis; spore and pollen Schizaeoisporites, Cyathidites, Cicatrieosisporites, Inaperopollenites, Psophosphaera, Monosulcites, Quercoidites.
